On The Tour You Will FindGarden Railroading is a relatively new outdoor hobby combining gardening and landscaping with large “G” scale model railroads (approximately 4 times larger than the common “HO” scale). Various levels of gardening and model railroading skills and interests can be utilized. Some prefer to lay track around existing trees and other plantings, with a focus on track, bridges and trestles. Others enjoy more landscaping and gardening, including water falls and ponds with the challenge of finding flowers, plants and trees that coordinate with the size of the model railroad. Same scale buildings, towns and people, as well as sound effects, enhance the diorama, providing an allusion of activity.
Featured in this year’s tour are two urban railroads: one designed specifically for kids with a whimsical theme; another is a small railroad within a garden with tourist attractions from around the world. One of the three semi rural sites encompasses water features with a large arch bridge and trestle in a 1950’s theme; the second is a turn of the century western theme and lumber mill, with varied plantings and hand made buildings; and the third and largest has over 700 feet of track with multiple water features and a large 1950’s era town. One of these sites has been featured in the Green Bay Botanical Garden Walk. Most of the layouts are handicapped accessible. Well behaved children are welcome. There is no tour fee; however, donations are appreciated.
